Lots of letters in that title heading… Read on and they will make sense!
You cannot over-estimate the importance of the role of the trucking industry in our economy. “Nearly 70% of all the freight tonnage moved in the U.S. goes on trucks. Without the industry and our truck drivers, the economy would come to a standstill. To move 9.2 billion tons of freight annually requires nearly 3 million heavy-duty Class 8 trucks and over 3 million truck drivers. It also takes over 37 billion gallons of diesel fuel to move all of that freight. Simply – without trucks, America stops.” (ATA, Reports, Trends & Statisics)
With the advent of online shopping, combined with a movement by manufacturers to tend toward global sourcing, an increasing amount of our products will move on less-than-truckload (LTL) carriers. In fact, for years, LTL has been the delivery mode for consumer electronics, produce, and yes even screened enclosures and patio awnings! LTL is a great way to flow inventory from the manufacturer directly to US and Canadian homes!
Enter the relationship between Home Porch & Patio Kits Inc. (HPPKI) and our customers. Since we use LTL services to get our screened enclosures, patio covers and sunrooms to your door, there is a process that is part of the purchase agreement. It is there to protect both HPPKI and its customers. When properly executed, if there is damage to your shipment, you would not have to deal with the shipping claims and pay up front for replacement materials!
Check it out… most of the time, a tradesman like a plumber, gets to inspect products he orders from the manufacturer. If the product is damaged or faulty, he would send it back for a replacement. Then, when the replacement part comes in, he comes out to do the job. You might never even know there was an initial problem.
However, when you enter into an agreement to purchase and receive a product to be delivered by LTL you become “the plumber” so to speak. You necessarily become responsible to inspect and sign for it, simply because HPPKI cannot! If there is no damage, you sign for it free and clear. This means you can’t go back to the shipping company and claim damage – even hidden damage! If there is damage to the product, we have it worked out so as to make it easiest on both parties.
Most companies leave the customer in the unenviable position of dealing with the shipping company, filing damage claims in an effort to get their money back. On top of that, while you wait for money from the shipping company, you would have to pay up front to have the replacement parts sent out to you! Trust us – – this is no fun!
This is where we separate ourselves from our competition. Over the last 17 years, we have developed a method for our customers to receive the product such that it eliminates them from having to deal with the shipping company in the case of damage. When the customer follows our instructions we are able to get the replacement for the damaged material out to the customer VERY quickly without them being out of pocket and being stuck trying to get, what is going to be, only a portion back of what the damaged material is actually worth.
